Number Crunching in Basketball

High school and college team basketball players are restricted from displaying numbers of their choice on their team basketball jerseys.

Surprising, but true!

Basketball Jersey Numbers

A player who wanted to display a single digit number on his uniform due to his lean and trim physique was not allowed to do so. The NCCA and National Federation of State High School Associations, who have laid down these rules, have their own reasons for doing so.

This rule is laid down to promote integrity and simplicity in basketball matches at school and college level. Basketball is one sport where foul play and disqualification is signaled through the fingers. So, numbers more than 55 cannot be used by players. Furthermore, numbers like 6, 7, 8 and 9 are restricted from use. The intention of these authorities is to make it easy for the referee to signal the number only once using two hands only. The number 6, when signaled with both hands can also be confused with the number 51. Similarly, the number 8 can be confused with the number 53. In fact, numbers 1 and 2 were also restricted from use, as odds are high that they get mixed up with the referee’s signals of free throws after foul play.

Players are often unhappy with this restricted choice of numbers. In fact, some of them argue that in the current scenario, high end technology enables replay, therefore, making it easier to identify foul play etc.

However, the authorities intend to maintain the integrity and simplicity, and therefore, the numbers continue to remain limited. Well, the numbers 1 and 2, which were not allowed for use in the past, can now be used. Moreover, the number 0 in single or double digit, i.e. 00 can be displayed on the uniforms.

Origin of Number System

People often wonder about the origin of the number system in basketball. The origin of the number system in basketball is not known. However, it is evident from certain sources that it probably began in the 1960’s and is followed since then in the basketball game. Numbers play an important role in identification of players in most sports; more so in basketball for calling out foul. High school and college players must therefore, choose numbers as allowed by the authorities. Well, NBA does not limit any numbers from being used. 0 to 99 can be used.

Purchasing Lacrosse Uniforms

Lacrosse is a fast moving game; fun filled and exciting to play as well as watch. Like many other sports, even this one is played in teams, where the members sport uniforms to represent their team. As the lacrosse uniforms say a lot about the team, they must be chosen diligently. A variety of uniforms are available on both online and physical stores. What’s more, they are even customized to flaunt the team name, logo and player’s name and number. Although lacrosse uniforms consist of a pair of shorts and shirt, the specifications vary from place to place. It is therefore, advisable to check the specifications with the local authority before purchasing and customizing the uniforms.

Specifications for Uniforms

However, the general specifications are mostly common across all.
  • Men’s lacrosse uniforms mostly consist of shirts and shorts. As the uniform represents the team, the color can be chosen to match the team’s spirit and identity. Well, certain specifications apply here.
For instance: High school lacrosse uniforms for men must be of a solid color, whereas college lacrosse uniforms may not essentially have a solid color. However, the color of the shirts and shorts must have a dominant primary color for team identification.

Numbers given to players are mostly printed on the front and back. Once again, the rules vary according to the teams.

For instance: The number on high school lacrosse jerseys displayed in the front must be six inches tall and eight inches centered on the back. On the contrary, number on the uniforms for college teams must be ten inches tall in the front and twelve inches tall at the back. Specifications regarding trademarks are also mentioned.

It is therefore, advisable to check the rules with the local authority prior to purchase.
  • Women’s lacrosse uniforms consist of shirts and shorts with certain rules. So, before buying uniforms, enquiring about the specifications is mandatory.
Besides uniforms, safety gear must also be bought carefully. As the game of lacrosse involves a whole lot of physical contact, safety gear for protection against injuries is a must.
However, as the women’s game of lacrosse has less physical contact and is less rougher compared to men’s lacrosse, the gear also varies. So, the women’s game is different, and therefore, the gear varies significantly.
